The damage caused by flash floods in the eThekwini Metro and uThukela District - the hardest hit by recent inclement weather in KwaZulu-Natal - is estimated to be about R2 billion.

Ladysmith, which is in the uThukela District, was home to 23 of the 26 people who died as a result of the floods in the province in December, according to the Cogta Ministry. Infrastructure was also damaged.

KZN Cogta department spokesperson Siboniso Mngadi said while disaster teams were still finalising the assessment for the entire province, the R2 billion was only for the damage caused in the UThukela District and eThekwini Metro.
