Three years after the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ordered the state to investigate uncontested evidence that powerful Mbeki administration officials blocked the prosecution of apartheid cases, the latter has provided an "opinion" that recommends a public inquiry into those claims.
"The NPA [National Prosecuting Authority] must pursue the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry under either Section 84(2)(f) of the Constitution or the Commissions Act 1947 to investigate the extent of, and rationale behind, the political interference with the NPA between the period 2003 and 2017," former Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) member Dumisa Ntsebeza and his team stated in an opinion the NPA released on Monday.
