Former Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) commissioner Dumisa Ntsebeza says former president Thabo Mbeki's claims that there was never any political interference in TRC prosecutions shows why a commission of inquiry needs to investigate the reasons those cases stalled.

"It seems to me that an inquiry … that will focus on that contention [of political interference] will come close to 'clearing the air', with all actors having got the opportunity to state their cases," he said.

Ntsebeza and his team recommended such an inquiry after being tasked by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to investigate whether anyone could face charges for alleged interference in the prosecution of 300 cases identified by the TRC, in which alleged perpetrators had not been granted amnesty.
