The police's Operation Shanela boasts the arrests of more than 600 000 people, but there is generally a significant disparity between people arrested and those prosecuted for the crimes they are accused of committing.
On Monday, the management of the South African Police Service (SAPS) presented arrest statistics for the operation, which was started in May 2023 and rolled out to every province in South Africa.
The 71 576 operations conducted, which included roadblocks, stop and searches, high-visibility police patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, and compliance inspections at liquor outlets, led to the arrest of 616 423 people.
