Former president Thabo Mbeki has dismissed the evidence of ex-prosecutions boss Vusi Pikoli and other former state officials that political interference from his administration blocked the prosecution of apartheid-era cases, saying that the evidence was "nothing more than pure fabrication".

"The NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) must demonstrate enough integrity by apologising for not processing the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) cases, rather than engage in dishonourable behaviour of trying to hide behind a fig leaf which is nothing more than pure fabrication," the Office of President Thabo Mbeki said in a statement on Friday morning.

"During the years I was in government, we never interfered in the work of the NPA. The executive never prevented the prosecutors from pursuing the cases referred to the NPA by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission," Mbeki added.
