A Cape Town taxi driver who allegedly smashed the car windows of a motorist was arrested on Tuesday.

The City of Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said the incident happened in Durbanville.

He said the vehicle owner was cooperating with the police, which were yet to determine the charges against the driver.

A video of the incident shows the taxi driver hitting the front window of the motorist's car, who denies wrongdoing in response to an accusation that he hit the taxi driver's vehicle.

The driver appears to fetch an unidentified implement before hitting the front window with his bare hand, to which the motorist screams: "I've done nothing wrong."

The driver proceeds to hit the back window.

Screaming from inside the car, the motorist says, "I'm sorry," while the driver asks why he bumped his vehicle and hurls insults at him.

Smith said the taxi did not have a permit to travel on that route.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the 27-year-old driver would appear in the Bellville Magistrate's Court once charged.

He added Durbanville police registered a case of malicious damage to property.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that the taxi driver was not carrying a gun.
