The Western Cape government has asked for a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) probe into senior Theewaterskloof Local Municipality officials' attendance of the Rugby World Cup final in France during what the council dubbed an official state visit in October last year.

The municipality's deputy mayor, Good party member John Michels, and council speaker Derick Appel, jetted off in October just in time to attend the Rugby World Cup final.

For months, the provincial government sought information about the trip but it was stonewalled by the municipality.
