Mayor uses entertainment to fight social ills

accreditation

HARRY Gwala District Municipality has turned to entertainment to reverse the scourge of social ills in the community.

This comes after the municipality, in partnership with SABC, Ukhozi FM and other KZN government departments hosted a programme called Nyus’ Ivolume.

The programme started on Monday at Kokstad Central Park where they conducted health and wellness programmes for members of the public.

On Tuesday, Ukhozi FM were broadcasting live from Umzimkhulu, and there was also a 5km Thuma Mina Walk, as well as aerobics and a soccer match between Ukhozi FM and Harry Gwala District Municipality councillors.

On Thursday, the main programme was held at Ixopo at the Morningside Stadium.

“We are celebrating our 10-year anniversary since we started this programme in 2008. Our aim is to fight socials ills including alcohol abuse, abuse against women and children, drugs, and other problems facing our people,” said Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe.

He said they also want to educate, entertain and inform communities about the danger of socials ills.

Ndobe said this programme is being conducted in all local municipalities under the Harry Gwala District Municipality.

He said there are many economic spin-offs from this programme, especially for local businesses to take advantage of.
