- Google has introduced a feature that allows online shoppers to try on clothes virtually before buying them.
- The feature allows online shoppers to see how a piece of clothing will look on their bodies by trying the item on various models of a similar body type.
- It uses real-life models of different sizes, ranging from XXS to 44XL, with varying skin tones, body shapes, hair types, and ethnicities.

It's often hard to know what clothes will look like on you before you buy them, but worry not because Google now brings the fitting room experience straight to your device.
With Virtual try-on, Google allows online shoppers to see how clothes look on a variety of real models to identify what the clothes will look like on a body and skin type similar to the user's
"Forty-two percent of online shoppers don't feel represented by images of models, and 59% feel dissatisfied with an item they shopped for online because it looked different on them than expected," said senior director of product at Google, Lilian Rincon. "Now, thanks to our new virtual try-on tool on search, you can see whether a piece is right for you before you buy it."
Here's how it works:
The new generative-AI model takes just one image of a clothing item and accurately reflects how it would drape, fold, cling, stretch, and form wrinkles and shadows on a diverse set of real models in various poses.
When using the feature, tap products that have the "Try On badge on Search and select the model that resonates most with you.
Google's try-on feature uses real-life models of different sizes, ranging from XXS to 4XL, representing different skin tones, body shapes, hair types, and even ethnicities.
According to the multinational tech company, US shoppers can use the feature to try on women's tops from various brands, including Anthropologie, Everlane, H&M, and LOFT.
This technological solution has the potential to scale to more brands and items over time thanks to Shopping Graph, a comprehensive data set of products and sellers.
This means more options will come to virtual try-on for apparel, including men's tops, expected to launch later this year.
Finding exactly what you want
Google can also help customers search for a particular product they want while shopping online.
With the new guided refinements, shoppers in the US can finetune products until they find the particular piece they're looking for.
"Thanks to machine learning and new visual matching algorithms, you can refine using inputs like colour, style and pattern," Google stated. "And, unlike shopping in a store, you're not limited to one retailer: You'll see options from stores across the web. You can find this feature, available for tops to start, right within product listings."
