Journalist Paul McNally has penned a detailed account of the collusion he witnessed between police officers and drug lords in West Johannesburg.
The protagonist in his non-fiction book, The Street, is a shop owner named Raymond* who becomes embroiled in the ecosystem of crime, bribery and drug dealing.
McNally described the record of bribes dealers paid to police, which the dealers painstakingly noted in book.
"The dealers wanted it to be known that corrupt police are out there and they have records of it."
He also recounted the story of a young drug dealer who was friendly with Raymond before he was shot dead.
"When you see a young kid that has just been shot in the head, it really brings it home in a horrible, horrible way."
