Former head of the Government Communication and Information System Mzwanele Manyi is expected back at the judicial commission of inquiry into state capture on Tuesday after proceedings adjourned while he was still being cross-questioned.

Manyi appeared again before the commission on Monday where he was questioned about the department's dealings with The New Age (TNA) newspaper and its sister news channel ANN7.

He said the publications were "punished" by the private sector – whose role players "hunt like a pack" – because they offered an alternative voice to the mainstream media.

Manyi bought TNA and ANN7 from the Gupta family in 2017. The media companies went under about a year later.

The GCIS was criticised during Manyi's tenure for advertising what many felt was a disproportionate amount on the Gupta-owned publication because it was not audited by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe is expected to testify at the commission later on Tuesday regarding the party's decision to call several of the country's major banks to Luthuli House over closed Gupta accounts.
