Hwange National Park - There's this fable about a scorpion who gets struck with a sudden burst of wanderlust and begs a frog to piggy back him across a river, so he can explore further afield.
Understandably, the frog is hesitant, saying the scorpion will surely sting him. The scorpion retorts with the excuse that if he does sting the frog, the frog will sink and he will drown.
Somewhat convinced, the frog finally agrees and begins carrying the scorpion. However, midway across the river nature takes over and the scorpion does indeed sting the frog, dooming them both.
This fable - used to illustrate the point that the natural behaviour of some creatures is inevitable, no matter how they are treated - came to mind when we saw these images of a majestic lion taking down a vulnerable elephant calf in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe.
No matter how cute and small the creature is, the lion's instinct is to attack, not protect.
(Although there was that incredible story about a lioness who saved a baby baboon)

According photographer, Steph Walton, the elephant calf had first tried to charge the lion to scare it away, but soon turned tail to flee.
It was in this instant that the lion's instincts took over, it shot up and set off after the little pachyderm.
