A man is dead and his wife seriously injured after they collided while zip-lining on their honeymoon in Honduras, Central America.
The pair had been married for only five days when the tragedy occurred.
The Israeli couple, Egael Tishman (24) and his wife, Shif Fanken (27), arrived in Honduras last week as part of their honeymoon holiday. They’d boarded the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Allure of the Seas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, shortly after their wedding and arrived in Honduras five days later.
The accident happened on Thursday 5 July while they were on a treetop zip-lining excursion.
The excursion is among many several on the cruise liner’s website, where it’s described as an “extreme Caribbean zip-line tour”.
Shif was reportedly the first of the two to travel down the zip-line, but she got stuck in the middle. Her husband followed her shortly afterwards and collided with her at full force.
Rescue personnel said the couple were both conscious after the accident. Each had sustained a number of injuries including broken ribs. However while being taken to hospital in an ambulance Egael started to complain that he was having trouble breathing and was given an oxygen mask.
He succumbed to his injuries early the next morning. It’s possible he died of a brain haemorrhage, the Washington Post reports.
On Friday Shif was taken by air ambulance to America where she’s since undergone several surgeries. Her condition is now described as stable.
The Honduras tourism authority denies any liability on the zip-line personnel’s part and blames the couple for not following instructions. The authority maintains the personnel followed the correct safety protocols.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
