The force of the explosion hurled him through the air. Coughing and spluttering, his mouth full of sand and his ears ringing from the blast, Jaco van Gass did what was second nature to him as a soldier.
He lifted his gun, sat up in the darkness of the Afghan night and got ready to shoot. It was only then he noticed something didn’t feel right – he was trying to lift his left arm to support his weapon but nothing was happening.
Jaco looked down and saw his arm was gone.
