Meet Loiza Lamers: Next Top Model’s first transgender winner

accreditation
20-year-old Loiza Lamers made history by becoming the first transgender model to win Holland's Next Top Model title, founded by supermodel Tyra Banks.

According to De Gelderlander website, at the age of 10 she starred in a video called Van Lucas Naar Luus in which she spoke publicly about her transition. At the age of 18, just two years prior to her auditioning for Holland’s Next Top Model, she underwent gender reassignment surgery.

According to Cosmopolitan, Lamers kept her identity a secret from the producers in her auditions, until she was included as one of the final 13 contestants of the Dutch reality television show.

Lamers didn’t want her identity to affect her progress, but rumours quickly went public when she confessed that she was transitioning.

This isn’t the first time a transgender contestant has appeared in the Next Top Model franchise. In cycle 11 and 17 of America’s Next Top Model, Isis King and Virgg made their mark on the show when they became contestants on the US version of the show.

However, Lamers has become the first transgender contestant to win the modelling competition and has won a contract with Touché Models worth €50 000 (R759 372.50).

I think this is amazing that beauty competitions especially internationally shows that recognise transgender women.

Here is Lamer’s winning moment:
