The Department of Home Affairs is proposing a drastic overhaul of South Africa’s immigration laws, which it hopes will stem the illegal influx of migrants and prevent the “exploitation” of the country’s asylum system.

The sweeping policy changes are contained in a Public Consultation Policy Paper that Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi put out for public comment at the close of last year. If they make it through the public participation process and the legislative system, tighter measures will be put in place for foreign nationals to acquire permanent residency and citizenship.
