The children of Ferguson in Gqeberha received an unexpected Christmas gift last December, when a jungle gym was installed in the Richter Crescent public open space.
DA Ward 7 councillor, Brendon Pegram, said a couple of years ago the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality installed some playground equipment in Richter Crescent, only to remove it unceremoniously a few weeks later.
“The official word from the municipality at that stage was that the playground equipment would serve a greater need elsewhere in the metro, but that some equipment would be installed at Richter Crescent in the not-too-distant future,” said Pegram.
“After years of waiting on the metro to make good on its promise to install the much-needed playground equipment, I decided to approach the private sector for financial assistance in order to make the playground a reality.
“Provincial grand master of the Freemasons, Ric Gilmer, subsequently very kindly offered to fund the building with a jungle gym at the Richter Crescent park,” he added.
Early in December the jungle gym was finally constructed, and was immediately put to use by the children within the community.
“This very kind donation from the Freemasons has really been a blessing in disguise for a community that has very few public facilities.
“There are no parks with suitable playground equipment close to this community, and therefore parents are extremely happy about the generous donation that they have received,” the councillor concluded.
