Reunion Island volcano erupts

Cape Town  - Tourists on the French Indian Ocean Islands La Reunion have been spoiled by being able to witness a Le Piton de la Fournaise eruption, which last set off its thrilling display back in 2010

Pascal Viroleau, CEO of Vanilla Islands Tourism said the volcano began erupting in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Located within Réunion National Park, a World Heritage site, it is considered one of the major attractions of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Islands. Since the active areas of the volcano are not inhabited, its eruptions pose little danger and cause little damage.

Even when sleeping, the 530 000 year-old Piton de la Fournaise is considered a must-see said Viroleau.

Piton de la Fournaise is a typical example of a hot-spot volcano, with its basaltic shield and as one of the world's most active it is said to be in a phase of frequent but short-lived eruptions that start with lava fountains and produce large lava flows.
