WALTER Oelofse known as “Wally Junior” by listeners believes that information is the key to every problem. He educates his listeners about almost everything from women and children abuse, to motoring, sport and healthy lifestyle, on his Afrikaans and English programmes at The Voice of Matat Community Radio.
During his 30-minute programme every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday, he motivates listeners on fitness, education and how to stay away from wrong doings.
His radio career started in 1996 when he worked at Highway Radio for a period of two years. He had travelled to Swaziland, Namibia, Botswana and Lesotho to extend love to poor children as part of his church obligations.
When he spoke to the Fever about the high usage of drugs by young people, he called for religious leaders to pray for young people, saying their future is being destroyed by drugs and alcohol.
“This festive season, young people must practice self-control and stop drinking too much alcohol. I feel sad when I see young people drinking in public because God does not like what they are doing,” he said.
He said he believes in God and is not using social media for useless things.
“Social media was created for good purposes, now people are posting things that are far from good. Some people are using social media for things like kidnapping young girls. Young people should use social media to get skills, knowledge and for career and job opportunities.”
He said he is able to speak four languages including Zulu, Afrikaans, English and Sotho. Oelofse also said he likes to learn other people’s languages. In his spare time, he walks at least 10 km a week, plays football, and listens to radio programmes.
He said his ambition is to open his own Christian radio station to educate people about God.
