A woman pretending to be interested in buying bling tried to steal a diamond ring from a jewellery shop – by swallowing it.

The woman, identified by police only by her initials, M.A., was caught on CCTV security cameras trying to steal the ring from a jewellery shop in Istanbul, Turkey.

After entering the shop she asked jeweller Mehmet Erdogan to show her a five-stone diamond ring.

She allegedly first tried to slip the ring in her pocket, but Erdogan noticed it was missing and asked her if she'd taken it.

She then allegedly took out a bottle of water from her bag, slipped the ring into her mouth and washed it down with a drink.

But Erdogan realised the ring was missing and checked CCTV footage. After noticing what had happened he called the police, who soon arrived on the scene.

Officers took the woman to a hospital where an X-ray confirmed the ring was in her stomach.

M.A. was then charged with theft and released on bail, even though the ring was still inside her.

Police say once nature has taken its course the woman will either have to return the ring to the shop, or pay for it. She also faces a fine or jail sentence.
