Lwandle community leaders lambasted the Western Cape Department of Education accusing it of failing to fulfil its promises. They said the department vowed to open the newly established Lwandle Primary School early this year but failed to deliver on its promises. “School to open soon”, City Vision, 25 January).
“The school is set to open in January 2025. It is part of a multi-phase construction of schools in the Lwandle Education precinct,” said Millicent Merton, the directorate for communication in the department, saying that Phase one of the school is completed.
Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso stated that it is news to them. He said according to the agreement that they had with the department, the school was supposed to be opened at the beginning of the school’s second term but that didn’t happen.
“Initially, the school was supposed to be opened at the beginning of this year. The department changed its tune, citing the delay on the site and vowed to open it in the second term.
“Now, I’m puzzled when they say they will open it next year. It’s news to us. The department didn’t even inform us about that,” said Diniso.
He stated that he wrote a letter to the district manager in Kuils River enquiring about the process of staff hiring.
“On Wednesday 3 April, I wrote a letter and emailed it to the district manager, wanting to know about the process of hiring the staff members. He didn’t say anything, instead, he acknowledged it and undertook to revert to me soon,” explained Diniso.
He vowed to follow the matter up with the department.
