In a welcoming glimmer of “light”, residents in the Table View area are giving the City of Cape Town a thumbs up for finally repairing the street lights along the R27 (West Coast Road).
After enduring nights without proper street lights, motorists rejoice as the glow of street lights illuminate their pathways once more.
“For too long, the absence of adequate lighting has cast a pall over our community, leaving us vulnerable to accidents and criminal activity under the cover of darkness. However, thanks to the diligent efforts of local authorities and tireless advocacy from concerned citizens, this once neglected issue has finally been addressed,” says resident Lionel McKenzie.
The City of Cape Town’s energy department has been repairing the street lights along the R27 in the Table View area over the last few weeks.
This is the next phase of a long-term project to replace copper wires with aluminium all along the R27 to deter thieves and vandalism. The repairs cost about R850 000, Ward 107 Councillor, Jonathan Mills, confirmed.
“Ensuring that this major road stays well lit provides an important safety benefit to residents. Replacing material that has a high scrap-metal value with material that does not have the same value sends a message to criminals that the City will work to make sure crime doesn’t pay,” Mills said.
