Three people died in a fire in Zwelethemba on Sunday 12 November.
“An officer was on duty, patrolling in the area of Mandela Square, when he saw smoke in the distance,” Warrant Officer Vathiswa Jacobs, spokesperson for the Worcester police, said.
“He drove to the spot where the smoke was coming from, and found an informal dwelling on fire.
“The fire department came and put the fire out, but found three people had perished before they could extinguish it.
“They were unfortunately burnt beyond recognition and could not be identified. Nor was it possible to determine their gender.”
According to a neighbour whose dwelling also burnt down, Jabli Mbalaka, three structures burnt down that day. He also explained what happened.
“Three men and a woman came home at 02:00 and went to sleep. Later one of the men left. He wanted the woman in the shack to come outside, but the men inside didn’t want to open the door. So he set the place on fire and ran away, leaving them to perish.” – Namhla Monakali
