A security guard is recovering in hospital after he was shot and robbed of his belongings while on patrol in Mackenzieville, Nigel.
Dashcam footage from the patrol car shows the guard lighting a cigarette during a break from his patrol. Moments later loud bangs can be heard and the guard is assaulted.
Nigel police spokesperson Sergeant Neliswa Dwaba said the guard was resting on Ghandi Street when he was approached by three men on Monday night.
"The guard was approached by three men on foot, who fired shots at the vehicle," she said.
"He was shot in his right arm," Sergeant Dwaba added.
She said the men opened the door and demanded the firearm, but the guard was unarmed.
"They dragged him out of the vehicle and searched it before pushing him back inside the car and driving off."
Dwaba added that the men abandoned the car at a cemetery in Alra Park and robbed the guard of his wallet, cellphone and bulletproof vest.
Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
